The hydrophilic property of montmorillonite(Mt)limit its homogeneously dispersed in organic medium,in oder to improve the hydrophobic of Mt,as well as expand the application in coating,cosmetics,drilling fluid and polymer nano-composites,the modification of Mt are investigated by using cation exchange method.In this paper,organo-montmorillonite(OMt)with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)and octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride(OTAC)was synthesized by cation exchange reaction.The influence of different alcohol additives,surfactant type,alcohol additives ratios and surfactant concentration on the interlayer spacing,functional group and colloid yield of OMt was investigated.The characterization of OMt samples were measured by X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR)and colloid yield.The solubility of surfactant in ethylene glycol is the largest.The increase of interlayer spacing and colloid yield of Mt to 2.05 nm and 78%,when the volume ratio of water and ethylene glycol for 75:25,the surfactant concentration of CTAB and OTAC to 1.0 CEC.The OMt with CTAB,OTAC and nonionic surfactant was also synthesized.The influence of surfactant concentration on the interlayer spacing,surface property,particle size,colloid yield and dispersing stability of OMt in xylene was investigated.And the adsorption mechanism of surfactant on the Mt and dispersive mechanism of OMt in xylene was proposed.With the increase of surfactant concentration,the layer spacing increases to 4.14 nm,and the structure of Mt remains by XRD and FT-IR.Because intercalation of NIS into the layers of Mt by hydrogen bonding,van der Waals force and hydrophobic interaction.Thermogravimetric analysis(TG),differential thermogravimetry analysis(DTG)and contact angle test showed that the mass loss inceeased with the increased surfactants which is absorbed on the surface of Mt and OMt is more hydrophobic.The scanning electron microscope(SEM)images and particle size distribution suggested that the higher surfactant concentration,the smaller paericle size and more foliated.When the OMt was dispersed in xylene,it was found that between surfactant and Mt paericles by hydrogen bonding,van der Waals force and hydrophobic interaction.Between Mt paericles and Mt paericles by edge-to-edge,face-to-face,face-to-edge and multifacial linking existed simultaneously.Between surfactants and xylene by hydrophobic interaction,which lead to colloid yield and stability to 100% and 96 h,respectively.
