The problem of ecological environment, brought about by urbanization,is more and more prominent. So the construction of eco-cities is paid special attention by the state. The improvement of eco-environmental quality has become an urgent need for people to ensure the quality of life.Comprehensive assessment of eco-environment has been an important basis for the development and utilization of resources, the formulation of economic and social sustainable development plans and eco-environmental protection measures. It can also provide reference for further improving the eco-environmental quality of the research area as well as planing sustainable development. This paper takes Dongguan City as the research area, remote sensing image data from Landsat satellite in 1996,2006,and 2016 as the main information sources.Supported by remote sensing, geographic information system, and global positioning system, the Ecological Index(EI)and Remote Sensing Ecological Index(RSEI)were compared to evaluating overall eco-environmental status of Dongguan City in 1996?2006 and 2016.It was found that using the Remote Sensing Ecological Index(RSEI)is feasible to be used to analyze and evaluate the eco-environmental status of Dongguan City. Therefore, this paper mainly uses the method of Remote Sensing Ecological Index to select indicators, such as greenness, humidity, heat, and dryness, and uses principal component analysis to determine index weights,so as to calculate the Remote Sensing Ecological Index of Dongguan and divide the RSEI level. On this basis, the current eco-environment status of Dongguan City in 2016 and the dynamic changes from 1996 to 2016 were further assessed. The results of the study indicate that:(1)Surface vegetation and soil moisture have a positive effect on the eco-environment status in Dongguan City;dryness and heat are negative for the first principal component, having a negative impact on the eco-environment status in Dongguan City.(2)In 1996,2006,and 2016,the average RSEI values of Dongguan Remote Sensing Ecological Index respectively were 0.504,0.463,and 0.584.The overall trend was an upward trend.(3)The eco-environment status of Dongguan City is moderate and well-maintained in2016;the areas with good eco-environment status are mainly concentrated in the mountainous regions in the southeast and and hills in south-central parts of Dongguan;the areas with poor eco-environment status are mainly distributed in the central urban area and northwestern water towns. The higher the vegetation coverage, the better the eco-environment status.(4)From 1996 to 2016 this 20 years, there were 39.84% of the area in Dongguan City, its eco-environment status became better, and 52.41% of the area remained at the same level. The overall ecological environment of Dongguan City has been improved.
