Carbon nanocones?CNCs?are multilayer graphene-like nanomaterials with a hollow conical structure and an inner size varying continuously from several nanometers to micrometers.Due to the big hollow space,CNCs provide a workhorse to investigate encapsulation phenomenon and nano-confinement effects on a sub-micron scale.Also CNCs could be used as the materials of SPM tips cause of the unique conical shape and excellent mechanical and electrical properties.However,the relatively dull multiwalled apex structure would influence the practical application,thus it is necessary to modify the apex of CNCs.In this paper,we mainly performing the following work:?1?With Gd acetate as foreign material,CNCs as filling template,we studied the encapsulation morphology of Gd acetate inside CNCs on a nano-micron scale and the decomposition of Gd acetate to polycrystal and sing-crystal Gd oxide.?2?Using micro-operating system,we successfully fabricated a novel CNC@W tip.Different from the traditional carbon material nanotips which lying on the physical forces,this new tips depend on the chemical bond to connect CNC and W tip,thus it is more tighted than traditional carbon material nanotips.What's more,we also fabricated the Gd2O3@CNC@W tip with apex encapsulated with Gd2O3;?3?We attempted various methods to modify the apex of CNC@W tips in situ and finally got a new CNC@W tip which had a more sharpened apex.As a conclusion,we investigated the encapsulation morphology on this sub-micron scale.Meanwhile,we successfully fabricated a novel CNC@W tip with the help of micro-operating system and modified the tip in situ to obtain a more sharpened apex.
