With the common landscape plants Cinnamomum camphora,Viburnum odoratissimum,Magnolia grandiflora,Eriobotrya japonica,Salix babylonica,Cerasus serrulate,Photinia serrulate,Aucuba chinensis,Camellia japonica,Chimonanthus praecox in Yijin campus of Zhejiang Agriculture & Forestry University in Hangzhou,Zhejiang Province chosen as the object of study, this research aims to select plants with the strongest ability to retain PM.First, the leaf samples of the plants were collected to measure the variation of physical signs, such as PM amount per leaf area before and after the retention process,PM amount per leaf, relative water content of leaves, leaf mass per area(LMA),proline(Pro),malondialdehyde(MDA),and chlorophyll(Chl). Then the rankings of the plants’ resistance were given according to subordinate function values analysis. At last, the plants with the strongest retention ability were selected through analytic hierarchy process(AHP).The main findings are as follows:Based on the total amount of PM adsorbed by plants of different growth forms, evergreen arbors have the strongest retention ability while deciduous arbors are the weakest. There is a distinctive different between the capacity of different plants to adsorb particulates of different sizes during the whole year(p < 0.05).And the ability of the same plant to retain particulates is also different. The ranking of the capacity of the ten plants to retain TSP in a year follows the sequence: Magnolia grandiflora>Eriobotrya japonica> Cinnamomum camphora> Viburnum odoratissimum> Photinia serrulate>Aucuba chinensis>Camellia japonica> Chimonanthus praecox> Cerasus serrulate> Salix babylonica. And their ability to adsorb PM10 follows: Cinnamomum camphora>Viburnum odoratissimum>Photinia serrulate>Salix babylonica>Eriobotrya japonica> Magnolia grandiflora> Aucuba chinensis>Camellia japonica>Chimonanthus praecox>Cerasus serrulate. As for PM2.5,the sequence is: Cinnamomum camphora>Photinia serrulate>Magnolia grandiflora> Viburnum odoratissimum>Salix babylonica>Aucuba chinensis>Camellia japonica> Eriobotrya japonica> Chimonanthus praecox>Cerasus serrulate. After the retention process, the physical signs of the plants changed distinctively. The content of LMA,MDA and Pro increased while Chl and relative water content decreased. After analyzing the comprehensive retention ability of the ten plants in spring, summer and autumn,it was found that the capacity of Magnolia grandiflora and Eriobotrya japonica was less influenced by the change of season and is stronger.Besides, due to their high ornamental value, they are more suitable to be planted in garden architectures. There is great difference between the adsorbing capacity of Viburnum odoratissimum and Photinia serrulata, but their resistance is weak.So they are suitable for the detection trees for air pollution. The retention ability of Salix babylonica is relatively weak, but they are suitable for landscape plants due to its relatively high resistance and ornamental value.
