The contradiction between population, economy and resources in the process of rapid development of cities in the arid regions of northwest China has gradually emerged. The theory of urban comprehensive carrying capacity is an important means to solve such urban problems. In this study,23 cities in 4 provinces in the northwestern arid region were used as research targets.According to the size of each city and the functional orientation of the city, they were divided into five categories: Class A is the provincial center-large city, and Class B is the Provincial sub-center-medium city,Class C is regional center-medium city,Class D is a provincial sub-center-small city, and Class E is regional center-small city.According to the report of the 19 th National Congress and related discussion, the mechanism of the “Production-life-ecological space” is proposed.Based on this, the evaluation system of urban comprehensive carrying capacity is constructed. The entropy weight method is used to calculate the bearing capacity of each city, and the coupling coordination model is used to evaluate each city.Further use the analysis of obstacles and the classification of Jenks natural discontinuities.research shows:(1)In terms of production space carrying capacity and living space carrying capacity,it is basically shown that large cities are higher than small cities, and old cities are emerging cities. In terms of ecological space carrying capacity, some small cities have higher levels.Combined with the comprehensive bearing capacity and cluster analysis of each city, the comprehensive bearing capacity distribution of the cities in the arid regions of Northwest China is not balanced, forming a multi-polarization development model dominated by Lanzhou,Yinchuan,Urumqi and Erdos. It shows the situation of high and low bearing capacity from east to west, which is divided into high value area in the east, low value area in the middle east, high value area in the central and western areas, and low value area in the west.(2)On the whole, there are no cities in the 23 cities that are in good coordination and coordination, and 7 cities are in a state of cohesive coordination and on the verge of being out of tune.It shows that the production space, living space and ecological space in the region have not achieved common development.(3)In terms of obstacle degree, land planning area,built-up area, total water resources, regional GDP,proportion of green area, scale of infrastructure investment per unit of urban area, number of basic education teachers, number of colleges, and The 10 indicators such as labor productivity and number of cinemas have the greatest impact on the cities in the arid regions of Northwest China, and the widest range is an important obstacle to the progress of the comprehensive carrying capacity of cities in the region.Possible innovations: starting from the coupling law of urban production space, living space and ecological space,Take the city of the arid northwestern region with unique ecological environment and social structure as an example. The study on the comprehensive carrying capacity of cities in the arid regions of Northwest China was carried out,and corresponding suggestions for urban development in the region were proposed.
