Polyester fiber is widely used in various fields due to its excellent properties such as high breaking strength, good elasticity, excellent thermal stability solvent resistance and water wash resistance. The fiber used in the nib of common marker in life is polyester fiber. The pen-powered countries such as the United States and Japan have a complete set of standard systems for matching, designing, manufacturing, and evaluating markers. There is a big gap between China and the pen-powered countries,in terms of the corresponding production technology and theoretical research.Due to the absence of hydrophilic groups in the molecular chain of the polyester, the polyester fiber nib has poor affinity with the environmentally-friendly water-based ink.So far, polyester fiber nibs produced in China still have problems in its properties, such as long delivery time, low water absorption rate, poor writing stability, and large ink residue. The fiber nib is the main part which determines the performance of the marker. Therefore, the development of high-quality polyester fiber nib and the study of the working mechanism of the marker pen are of great significance to improve the quality of China's marker pens. This topic aims to design polyester draw texturing yarn(DTY)with different crimp contraction and fineness. The effect of processing conditions on the crimp contraction of the fiber was studied. The effect of the thermal properties of the fiber on the processing temperature of the nib bar was analyzed. The fiber nib was modified by surfactant to improve its hydrophilic. The ink-drinking of the fiber nib was analyzed by using model. The flow model of the ink in the marker was established. The relationship between fiber structure, performance and nib performance was built to provide a basis for the development of high-quality marker nibs.(1)The preparation and performance of the polyester fiber for the fiber nib.The polyester fibers were designed with different crimp contractions and finenesses. The effect of processing temperature on the crimping contraction of the fiber during the elastic process was studied. The physical and mechanical properties of the fiber were analyzed. The effect of fiber thermal properties on the setting temperature of the nib bar was discussed.Surface of polyester fibers was modified with adhesives and surfactants, and characterized by contact angle. The results show that the increase of the texturing temperature and the decrease of the setting temperature all result in a increase in the crimp contraction of the fiber. The adhesive on the surface of fiber increases the contact angle of the fiber with water. However, the use of the surfactant reduce the contact angle of fiber with water. The fiber contact angle after treatment with surfactant AEO-5 decreased from85.6°to 63.8°.(2)The preparation and performance of polyester fiber nib.The polyester fiber nibs were designed with a size of?4.1x30.5 mm using polyester DTY as the raw material. The ink-drinking behavior of the nib is described by a single capillary vertical wicking model. The effect of surfactant on the delivery time of polyester fiber nib was studied. The water washing resistance of nibs modified with different surfactants was also analyzed. The most probable pore size and pore size distribution of different types of nibs were studied. The effects of fiber crimp contraction, fiber fineness, number of fibers and the amount of adhesive on the delivery time, water absorption, surface hardness and cross-sectional appearance of the nibs were studied. It was found that the delivery time of the nib decreased first and then increased with the increasing capillary diameter in the nib according to the single capillary vertical wicking model. When the pore size reaches the theoretical critical equivalent radius R*,the delivery time of the nib is minimized. The theoretical critical equivalent radius R*for prepared nib is about 84?m.With the increase of fiber crimp contraction and fiber fineness, the overall pore diameter inside the nib became larger, and the delivery time of the nib reduced. The delivery time of studied nib samples can reach the lowest value of 3.02 s.The water absorption rate of the nib increases with the increase of the fiber crimping contraction. When the fiber crimp contraction is 41%,the water absorption rate of the nib reachs the highest value,69%.The diameter of inner pore of the nib increases with the decreasing number of yarns. When the equivalent radius of the capillary in the nib exceeds the actual critical equivalent radius R~#,the delivery time and the water absorption rate of the nib increases. With the increases of the adhesive content in the nib,the water absorption rate of the nib decreases, the delivery time and the hardness of the nib increases, and the wear resistance is enhanced.(3)The writing performance of fiber nib matching fiber core. The flow model of ink in the marker was established based on the single capillary vertical wicking model. The most probable pore size and pore size distribution inside the core were analyzed. The effects of fiber crimp contraction, fiber fineness, fiber number and adhesive content, and fiber core density on the ink consumption, writing stitch, ink residue of the makers and the wear resistance of the nibs were systematically investigated. Results show that as the density of the fiber core increases, the amount of ink consumption by the marker decreases and the amount of ink residue increases. The ink consumption of the marker pen is affected by many factors, such as the flow rate of the ink in the nib,the number of capillary holes in the nib,and the aperture. The smaller the capillary diameter of the nib,the larger the capillary pressure difference between the nib and the fiber core, and the lesser the amount of ink consumption after use.As the fiber fineness and the crimp contraction rate decreases, and the number of fibers increase, the amount of ink residue decreases.
