In industries such as construction,manufacturing etc.,epoxy resin has been extensively used.However,due to the inflammable property of epoxy resin,it is necessary to modify the inflaming retarding of epoxy resin so as to ensure its safety.Melamine cyanurate(MCA)and a variety of substances have good synergistic effect of inflaming retarding.Therefore,MCA was selected as the main flame retardant to modify epoxy resin materials.However,MCA as the added dose can affect mechanical properties of the materials,so it is necessary to find another additive agent that can increase the mechanical properties to co-modify the epoxy resin.The mechanical properties of carbon fiber itself are very desirable,once added to other materials,it can also increase the mechanical properties of the substrate material;on the other hand,carbon fiber has the characteristics of non-combustible,which not only makes the mechanical properties the substrate material with the addition of carbon fiber improved,but also can reduce the combustion performance.Therefore,in this study,MCA and carbon fiber are selected as the common flame retardant for epoxy resin materials.In this study,5 kinds of MCA/epoxy composites with different ratios and 9 kinds of MCA/carbon fiber/epoxy three-phase composites with different ratios are prepared.The main analytical methods used are limit oxygen index analysis,cone calorimeter analysis,thermal stability analysis,mechanical analysis,etc.The flame retardancy,thermal stability,mechanical properties and inflaming retarding mechanism are explored.The results show that in the two-phase composite,with a 5% MCA,it will have the best inflaming retarding performance.While in the three-phase composite,when the carbon fiber content is 0.7%,and the MCA content is 5%,its inflaming retarding performance is enhanced in its variable system,such as the limit oxygen index,heat release rate,smoke generation rate,mass loss rate and so on.Compared with pure epoxy resin,the mechanical properties are also improved.Through verification of experiment and relevant literature review,it can be concluded that the inflaming retarding mechanism of the three-phase composite is gas-phase inflaming retarding and promoting the formation of carbon layer in the composite.
