Objective In this paper, the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of aromatic plant distillation residue and waste liquid were studied, and their active components were analyzed. The purpose of this paper is to provide a basis for aromatic plant compound antimicrobial agents and compound antibacterial agents of aromatic plant and positive drug as cosmetic antimicrobial agents. Methods The waste residue of aromatic plant distillation was extracted by ultrasonicassisted extraction, and the best five kinds were selected by diffusion method and microbroth dilution method.Through the determination of free radical scavenging ability and total reducing ability, the antioxidant activities of five aromatic plant extracts and aromatic plant compound antimicrobial agents were analyzed, and the contents of total phenols and total flavonoids were determined. Its components were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).Aromatic plant compound antimicrobial agents was compounded with Nipagin methyl ester, and the stability of the two types of composite antimicrobial agents at different temperature,UV irradiation time and p H value was determined. The possibility of two kinds of compound antimicrobial agents becoming cosmetic antimicrobial agents was validated by microbial challenge experiment. Results The experimental results showed that the bacteriostatic effect of aromatic plant distillation residue was generally better than that of distillation waste liquid through diffusion method and micro-broth dilution method.Among of them, the bacteriostatic effect of American peppermint leaf, snow chrysanthemum, basil, rose and Roman chamomile distillation residue was the best.Compared with the single aromatic plant antibacterial agent, the aromatic plant compound antibacterial agent improved the inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Aspergillus Niger was improved in combination with positive drug compound antibacterial agent, even higher than that of positive drugs, and through the determination of free radical scavenging ability and total reduction ability,It was found that the antioxidant capacity of snow chrysanthemum distillation residue was the best.Through the determination of total phenols and total flavonoids,it was found that the highest content of total flavonoids in aromatic plant compound antimicrobial agents was 0.8071 mg RT/mg DW.The highest total phenolic content in rose distillation residue was 0.1434 mg GAE/mg DW.The results were determined by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).It was found that five aromatic plants Distillation residue extracts and aromatic plant compound antimicrobial agents had higher flavonoid content, but less phenolic acid content. The stability study found that the two composite antimicrobial agents were stable at different temperatures, ultraviolet light time and p H value, and according to the standards of the United States Pharmacopoeia,0.2 % and 0.1 % of the antimicrobial compound and 0.1 % of the positive antimicrobial agents could pass the microbial challenge test. Conclusion Aromatic plant compound antimicrobial agents can be compounded with methyl p-hydroxybenzoate,which can not only play a synergistic role, but also reduce the cost, protect the environment and improve the utilization rate of resources owing to use of waste residue extract and discharge reduction of essential oil extraction.Because of the good antioxidant effect of natural plant compound antimicrobial agents,it provides a new direction for the development of natural functional cosmetics.
