Organic polymer materials are widely used in various fields of people's life and national economy because of their low density and strong molding ability, which has become the largest material in the current production. However, the vast majority of organic polymer materials are combustible and flammable. There will be a great fire hazard if used directly. Therefore, improving the flame retardant properties of materials has become one of the key fields of materials science research.Limit oxygen index method has become the most widely used quantitative index of flame retardant performance because of its advantages of good repeatability and high resolution all over the world. At present, limit oxygen index testing equipment developed slowly, the level of automation is extremely low,and the operation is complicated for operators. Therefore,a set of automatic oxygen index tester is developed.Firstly, the basic principle of oxygen index method, and the overall design scheme of automatic oxygen index tester in combination with national standards are introduced. The whole system is divided into mechanical module, gas flow distribution module, ignition module, measurement module, and then all sub-modules are introduced in depth. In addition,in order to improve the usability of the system,a set of non-contact specimen and flame sharing measurement system based on image recognition is developed, and confirmed. Then, the submodules and the whole system of the automatic oxygen index tester are tested thoroughly. The test results show that the tester reaches the predefined goals of fully automatic and meet the national standard requirements. Finally, according to the combustion phenomenon of the specimen,a new method of rapid approximation of oxygen index is proposed, which is verified by the test of some materials.
