Research On Application Of "Chinese Style" In The Cruise Furniture Design

The cruise ship industry has been developed in western country for more than one hundred years,and its cruise ship furniture is so matured that a systematic industry chain covering design,manufacture,assembly and shipment has been built early.Architects,industrial designers,luxury designers from the United States,Europe and Nordic Europe all have a deep understanding about cruise ship culture.At present,adequate and systematic services for luxury cruise ship furniture industry in China is still in their beginning stage.No Chinese company really devotes themselves into this special field,namely,furniture design for luxury cruise ship furniture.This paper aims to explore key elements for using “Chinese Style” in designing cruise ship furniture,and then provide theoretical basis for Chinese domestic cruise ship furniture design,via researching the design concept of in modern “Chinese Style” which is then combined with the field of cruise ship furniture.Focusing at the “Chinese crazy” phenomenon popularized in the modern society,this paper puts forward its own understanding about modern “Chinese Style” after researching how both ancient and modern,Chinese and foreign scholars understood the “Chinese Style” by means of documentary analysis.In addition,on basis of relevant theories of furniture design,characteristics and application value of furniture design on modern society is summarized.Excellent furniture design with modern “Chinese Style” will not only contain the inner deposition of traditional furniture,but also improve the external form of traditional furniture.The most important thing is that furniture design with modern “Chinese Style” should be based on the demands of Chinese people.Only in these ways,can “Chinese Style” culture be perfectly adopted into the cruise ship industry.Through approaches of on-field investigation,illustration and comparison,taking restrictive factors inside the cruise ship such as environment,function demanded and target groups as the breakthroughs,differences between cruise ship furniture and overland furniture are summarized,and furniture configurations and design characteristics for different functional room inside both the typical and customized cruise ship are analyzed in detail,aiming to present key elements in designing cruise ship furniture for later sections.The relationship among tourists-furniture-cruise ship environment is systematically researched by interdiscipline methods,and necessity of applying the ergonomics into cruise ship furniture design and prospective in cruise ship furniture design is discussed in the paper,which are then combined with theories of furniture design to put forward the principles of coordination,material and structure innovation in design of cruise ship furniture.Finally,key elements for designing cruise ship furniture adopting “Chinese Style” are obtained.In the end of the paper,taking furniture used in typical room inside the cruise ship as an example,a design practice showing the process of designing a cruise ship furniture adopting “Chinese Style” is presented on the basis of key elements mentioned above,for providing reference for related designs in the future.
