With the deepening of globalization, the emerging economies represented by BRICS are playing increasingly important roles.Global cities are also gradually breaking through its single economic function, and speaking out in many issues at the global level.Global cities of BRICS have begun to play their unique roles in global environmental governance. This article compares the three global city rankings, and considers that Sao Paulo in Brazil,Moscow in Russia,Mumbai in India,Beijing and Shanghai in China, and Johannesburg in South Africa are currently the main BRICS global cities. In many significant issues of global environmental governance like climate change, air pollution, solid waste, biodiversity protection and the spread of global environmental governance concepts,BRICS global cities have outstanding performance.Based on the analysis of the governance practices of BRICS global cities, this article concludes that the main approaches for BRICS global cities to participate in global environmental governance include international cooperation, interaction with highlevel governments, and local autonomous promotion. From the governance model,it can be divided into government-led and multi-party cooperation. It shows the characteristics of complex governance tasks, diverse governance subjects, limited governance capabilities, stable governance advancement, complex governance mechanisms, and unique governance experience. For global environmental governance,BRICS global cities provided new governance increments, and accumulated governance experience for the majority of developing regions. In general, the BRICS global cities have injected new momentum into global environmental governance which is at a low tide now and become a new development force. However,it cannot be ignored that BRICS global cities are still at a relatively low stage of development compared with traditional global cities,so they still face a daunting task of environmental governance within their own territory, and there is still room for improvement in the participation and quality of global environmental governance. This requires deeper cooperation among BRICS global cities and other levels of cities, international organizations,nation-state governments and other diverse actors to improve.
