The aim of this paper is to:make a thorough inquiry in the cause and principle for cognitive difference phenomenon of automobile design renderings in practical application,and explore an evaluation method appropriate for automobile design renderings in actual design process to guide the improvement for quality of automobile design renderings and promote the transmission efficiency of information in the automobile design process.In the article,methods of document research and descriptive research is applied for the exposition of development and current situation for design process and the description for cognitive difference phenomenon of design renderings,document research method is adopted to investigate viewpoints and theories related to design process,design psychology and cognitive psychology,and discuss the cause and principle for the cognitive difference phenomenon of design renderings.Cognitive experimental materials have been made in the way of elements decomposition,psychological measure questionnaire form is established through questionnaire to obtain cognitive data for three types of design-related people,and the data is processed through mathematical method thus to obtain the weight of the influence of cognitive evaluative factors of design renderings on cognition.Design process of automobile styling is divided into five parts,including"inheritance stage of handcraft","exploration stage of division of process","exploration stage of modern design process",“digitalization stage”and "new turn stage".And the frequently-used design process of automobile styling at present is divided into three stages:“exploration stage for styling”,“profound stage for styling”and ""output stage for styling".The automobile design renderings is defined as aesthetic and imagery expression system for automobile styling,and the application and three kinds of main cognitive subjects of automobile design renderings are confirmed.effective cognitive factors and its weight related to design renderings have been obtained through cognitive experiment,and the data shows that the quality of line,the expression of light and the presentation of perspective have the strongest influence on design renderings,indicating the relation between cognitive difference and cognitive factors.The article believes that it is the division of labor in design process that causes the cognitive difference phenomenon of different cognitive subjects for automobile design renderings,and the cognitive difference mainly derives from the difference for cognitive experiment,knowledge structure and aesthetic response of individuals.Based on the discussion for cognitive pattern of information coding and decoding of automobile design renderings,the set of evaluation methods suitable for automobile design renderings with actual design process and operability has been built and the practice project has been verified.
