In modern architecture, more and more attention is paid to the development of architectural forms. However, the essence of architecture is neglected. This thesis takes the Chomsky transformation generative grammar in linguistics as the theoretical basis and combines structuralism and semiotics theory and uses Peter Eisenmann’s cardboard house is the object of study. It develops the form of architectural symbols under the self-generating theory of schemata as the entry point to formally read the text of the building and use it to study the deep structure and surface structure of the building.Through linear and nonlinear interpretations, exploring issues such as building autonomy and formal decomposition. The structure of the dissertation is divided into five chapters. The first chapter summarizes the research background, research contents, and research status of the dissertation. The second chapter outlines the theoretical foundations related to the cardboard houses, including linguistic foundation, structuralism and linguistics. The origins of Chomsky’s transformational generative grammar, the symbols in semiotics and its implications for architectural language, the basic theories of schemata and the deep structure and surface structure of architecture under two language models and architectural linguistic theories. The third chapter describes why Eisenman started a series of experiments on cardboard houses and the theory of architectural forms he wanted to express.Through in-depth analysis of the six buildings in the cardboard house.Based on the theory of Chomsky base transformation and generative grammar, the study of Eisenman’s architectural autonomy, and through the reading of formal symbols under a series of formal logics in the text of architecture, the deep structure behind the building is excavated;the fourth chapter is mainly about further theoretical refinement, including Double Reading,Non-Linear Reading of Eisenman’s CardboardBuildings, the Separation of Classicism under Nonlinear Reading,Surface Structure and Marking And the deep meaning of the grid in the cardboard board house further elaborated the transformation of architectural autonomy from a dominant position to a gradual disengagement process in a series of cardboard houses, and thus deeply understood Eisenman’s architectural ideas from structuralism to deconstruction. The transition of the doctrine;the fifth chapter is to summarize the whole thesis and explain some problems and enlightenments in the research process.
