Linguistic Features Analysis Of Architecture The Transformation Of Deep Structure To Surface Structure

Twentieth century has been called the "linguistic century", people began to connect architecture with language. Because of the comparable aspect between these two, this connection is not accidencial. In this article, we will introduce William Chomsky’s " Transformational Theory " into architecture, aiming to establish a useful methodology for architecture analysis and design.According to William Chomsky’s " Transformational Theory ", to generate the language is to transform "deep structure" to "surface structure." through " Transformational Theory". Analysis linguistic features of architecture by "transformational generative theory", this article proposed the transformation of "deep structure" to "surface structure" in architecture:the "deep structure" includes physical, spatial and architectural context, in which the phsical context is the core;"surface structure" is most expressive;"transformational generative mechanism" is the deep structure to obtain a building expressive.In this article, we took materiality (deep structure) as an example to analysis the convertion from "deep structure" to "surface structure", in gravity and structural performance, material and material expression levels. As the "transformational generative mechanism" is "the making power" for language,"transformational generative mechanism" is also the fundamental stimulate to architecture.
