With the development of the national economy and engineering technology, more and more tailings ponds are built in our country, and its scale be also growing. The tailings dam is an important part of t he construction activities of the mining construction and is also a huge source of danger.Once the tailings dam breaks down,it will pose a huge threat to the life and property safety of on-site construction managers and residents downstream of tailings p onds, the cyanide,a hazardous chemical in tailings ponds, which will cause huge damage to rivers, groundwater and surrounding animals and plants, the loss is immeasurable. So it 's necessary to carry out the safe production of tailings ponds effectively.T he traditional methods to evaluate the stability of tailings dam are the limit equilibrium method and the finite element strength reduction method. The limit equilibrium method regards rock and soil body as a rigid body in essence, but the nature of soil b ody is not rigid body,so the limit equilibrium method is not reliable to evaluate the tailings dam's stability. The finite element strength reduction method overcomes the defect of considering soil body as a rigid body. The finite element strength reducti on method overcomes the defect of considering the soil body as a rigid body. The shear strength index of the soil body is input to a fixed value in the finite element strength reduction method, which ignores the variability and dispersion of the rock and s oil mass,so The finite element strength reduction method is not objective.Reliability theory based on probability and statistics is an objective and effective method, however it is not widely used at home and abroad.Based on this point, this paper uses the genetic algorithm, the theory of spatial variability and the principle of reliability to evaluate the stability of Datachong No.3 auxiliary dam.The main points are as follows :(1)Using the Midas GTS software to build a three-dimensional model of Datachong No.3 auxiliary dam,Calculate the overall displacement,X-direction displacement,Y-direction displacement,Z-direction displacement, minimum principal stress, maximum principal stress,Z-direction stress and shear strain of Datachong No.3 auxiliary dam under normal working conditions and flood conditions under the action of its own weight.Calculating the safety factor using the finite element strength reduction method, and extract the sliding surface, and use the safety factor to evaluate the stabili ty of Datachong No.3 auxiliary dam.(2)Calculating the value of the spatial sample variogram of the shear strength index and the severity of Taitachong No.3 auxili ary dam tailings, and using the genetic algorithm to fit the parameters of the variability f unction of the shear strength index and the severity of the tailings to obtain the variability formula of the tailings.(3)Using the ordinary Kriging valuation method in the theory of spatial variability to estimate the value of Datachong No.3 auxiliary dam for shear strength index and heavy valuation.(4)The JC function is established based on the Swedish syllabus method, and using the JC method to calculate the reliability index of Datachchong No.3 auxiliary dam. Then the finite element strength reduction method is compared with the reliability index, then compare the calculation result of the finite element strength reduction method with the reliability index, and get the defect of the finite element strength reduction method in evaluating the stability of tailing dam.
