After decades of rapid urbanization in our country, many cities and towns have experienced the problem called “thousands of cities with the same characteristic”.In particular, for historical towns, many valuable cultural heritages have been destroyed, demolished,or destroyed constructively during the process of urban construction and development, because of awakening delay of decision-makers' protection awareness, and the pursuit of economic interests. After that,it was replaced by stereotyped residential areas, commercial areas,or antique blocks. At present, with the gradual slowdown of urbanisation, the pursuit of historic towns' urban identity has become increasingly strong. Therefore, policy makers, planners, and citizens need to pay attention to the existing cultural heritage of historical towns, and conduct research and conservation. The preconditions for the combing of urban culture and the education of the public are to be implemented,so as to enhance the understanding of the entire society on the history and culture of cities and towns, and urban identity shaping, then gradually reshape the historical towns' urban identity. As a new and massive concept of cultural heritage, the "Cultural Route" has been more and more valued and accepted. The concept of " Cultural Route " is a perfection of the cultural protection system, and it add new theoretical foundation and exploration direction to cultural study of historical cities and towns. For the shaping of historical towns along the cultural routes, this is an important opportunity to avoid sight constraints and considering a city in a city view.Because the general cultural routes have clearer historical context and stronger connection with major historical events,it can make the historical and cultural studies of the historic towns and their features based on it more systematic and clear. With the successful application of the World Cultural Heritage “Silk Roads: Changan-Tianshan Corridor”,and the proposal of the “Belt and Road” initiative, more domestic scholars have paid attention to issues related to the Silk Road. The government's attention, and the economic support has also created a rare opportunity for the development of towns along the Silk Road.In particular,Pingliang, the infamous historic towns along the Silk Road, should take this opportunity to conserve the existing cultural heritage,to study the city's historical context, and to shape the urban identity.Find their new position in the Silk Roads towns system to enhance the cultural identity of urban residents and enhance the competitiveness of the city. The research on the urban identity shaping of Pingliang historic town based on the Cultural Route theory is a new attempt. It is hoped that it will help many historic towns to achieve a better development under this opportunity. The dissertation consists of seven chapters and is divided into five parts:The first part(Chapter 1,Chapter 2): Theoretical research. From the background of the difficulties faced by historic towns and the urban identity crisis, the purpose and significance of research are proposed;research objects and research content are defined;research methods and frameworks are proposed;relevant concepts are analysed, and related theoretical studies at China and abroad are combed. After that, some practice projectes in abroad are intruducted. This chapter is pave the way for the following chapters. The second part(Chapter 3): Theoretical exploration.Based on the theory of "Cultural Route" constructed by Dr.Ding Yuan, from the relationship between cultural route and the close relationship between cultural routes and urban history and culture, the relationship between cultural route and historic towns' urban identity shaping is explained.Based on the above analysis, this dissertation constructs a system of historic towns' urban identity shapping including the connotation, structure, and elements,as well as the method of shaping. The third part(Chapter 4)explores the background of the Silk Road.By analyzing the historical background and characteristics of the China Silk Road, the relationship between the formation of towns along the Silk Road and the Silk Road, the status quo of the protection of the cultural heritage along the Silk Road, and the status quo and issues concerning the characteristics of historic towns along the Silk Road, this part summarizes the cultural features of the Silk Road Cultural Areas as a whole and the cultural characteristics of the material, humanities and nature of the towns along the route. The fourth part(5th,6th): empirical research. This part analyzes the historical evolution of Pingliang, the status in the Silk Road, the basic situation of the city, and the distribution of historical resources.Based on the analysis of history and current situation, combined with the previous research, this part discussed Pingliang historic town's urban identity shapping method from three aspects: the meaning and positioning of feature composition, the analysis and construction of feature composition, and the conservation and renewal of feature composition. The construction of the cultural identity of the citizens and the integrated development strategy of the Silk Roads is separately elaborated.Part fifth part(Chapter 7): Summary. At the end of the dissertation, the main results of the research are summarized;the innovations are explained;the deficiencies in the research are analysed, and the future research is prospected.
