The Construction Of Guangzhou Railway Station And Urban Space Development

This dissertation reviews the complete life course of Guangzhou Railway Station including its location,design,construction and completion.The construction process of Guangzhou Railway Station was complicated and resumed in the "Cultural Revolution" due to the need of Canton Fair.As one building of "Guangzhou Foreign Trade Project",Guangzhou Railway Station and other foreign trade buildings jointly shaped the 70 ’s brilliance of Guangzhou Railway Station Area,which is known as "Liu Hua Yu Yu".Soon after the start of the Reform and Opening-up,Guangzhou Railway Station has become the gateway that separated open areas and closed areas.Guangzhou Railway Station Area,as the adjacent land to "gate",has huge commercial value.Under the influence of policy,economy,environment and other aspects,Guangzhou Railway Station Area has experienced indelible change.In addition,Guangzhou Railway Station expanded into urban space in this process.Specifically,the location of Guangzhou Railway Station will be discussed below followed by the design process,final scheme and urban space.Chapter one analyzes the research background,defines the object and time period and clarifies the foundation,methodology and significance of the research.Chapter two introduces the location schemes of Guangzhou railway station under different urban planning requirements and the reasons for selecting the final scheme.Chapter three clarifies the design process of Guangzhou Railway Station,including the background,the demands and two design schemes of Guangzhou Railway Station.Chapter four analyzes the final scheme of the railway station,including reasons for resuming the project though it was in the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution,the adjustments of the design and the architects’ strategies.The following chapters analyze the development of Guangzhou Railway Station Area and the changes of Guangzhou Railway Station under the influence of Canton Fair and reform and opening up after it was built.Chapter five discusses the reasons why Guangzhou Railway Station Area became a foreign trade center and the process.Changes of urban morphology are observed from old urban maps.In addition,Guangzhou Railway Station expands into urban space in this process.Chapter six reviews the changes of Guangzhou Railway Station Area form the reform and opening up to 2006.Guangzhou Railway Station,as urban space,switched roles for many times.The dissertation explains the construction process and urban space of Guangzhou Railway Station by reading and analyzing historical materials.The whole life span of Guangzhou railway is revealed including the location,design,being used,influence on surrounded areas and changes into urban space.The research attempts to find out the deep reasons behind the phenomena and show the whole life of Guangzhou Railway Station.To review the history and the construction process of Guangzhou Railway Station is significant in thinking about the design strategies and value judgement of architects in South China and understanding the developing regularities of urban space in areas around railway stations.
