With global warming, rising sea evel and storm surge, shorelines have been increasingly erosed by water waves, posing a huge threat to people's lives and property and buildings in coastal regions.Coastal vegetation has started to attract the attention of coastal engineers due to their function as wave attenuator. It is necessary to investigate wave dissipation by vegetation,to mitigate the disaster of storm surge and coastal erosion.Wave attenuation by aquatic vegetation is down to the interacton between plants and water waves. As wave dissipation by vegetation is involved roots, stems and canopies, considering the factors of roots, stems and canopies is essential to the investigation of wave dissipation by vegetation. This can help radically uncover mechanism of wave attenuation by vegetation. The study in this paper can contribute positively to dynamics theories of biological coast like mangroves, and basically provide theoretical guidance for eological protection of coast. The primary objective of this paper is to experimentally investigate wave attenuation by vegetation patch, adopting quantitive generalized plant model to simulate roots, stems and canopies of coastal vegetation.Through the wave flume experiment, the mechanism of wave dissipation by vegetation patch composed of different types of plants. The effects of hydrodynamic factors and vegetation factors on wave decay along vegetation field and transmitted coefficients are investigated. This is achieved by setting four types of water depth, four types of wave height and three types of wave period and varying arrangement densities of roots and canopies. With experimental data, the relationships between transmitted coefficients and dynamics factors and vegetation factors are established, providing references for the later studies.
