Research and engineering application of traffic signal control system for modern urban intersection is of great realistic significance,for alleviating the traffic congestion,improving the level of traffic safety,and strengthening the standardization construction of the system and the application of Engineering Technology,at the intersections of large and medium cities in China.The author carries out multiphase study for NEMA-based traffic signal control technology,key technology of NTCIP,and designing of modern traffic signal controller.Besides,the author presents how to implement the traffic signal control conforming to NEMA standards,and the achievement is applied to practical engineering.Based on design objective of traffic signal control system for modern urban intersection,the author analyzes the key traffic engineering equiment and the designing scenario of the system function.Besides,the basic features of the system have been condensed.Concerning the key NEMA-based traffic signal control technology,including signal phase design,isolated intersection timing,coordination timing,preferential treatment,and oversaturation mitigation,the author explores the difference between NEMA-based standards and current norms in China,and application feasibility;concerning the NTCIP,the open architecture of ITS communication protocols,the OID objects of traffic signal controller and its implementing method are presented;concerning NEMA standards and Embedded software and hardware development technology,a system design and development method of modern traffic signal controller is elaborated.On the basis of actual traffic signal engineering project located at the intersection of Tuan Jie Road and Hua Chuang Road in Jiang Bei New Area,through the optimal design of signal phase,detection means,and traffic signal control program,the technical method of NEMA-based traffic signal control system for modern urban intersection is implemented and verified,of which the actuated-coordination control is emphatically applied,and consequently it has a strong demonstration effect on the improvement and standardization of traffic signal control at intersections of China.
