Advanced traffic signal control techniques have been widely used along with the rapid development of urban Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The efficiency of these techniques, in the meantime, needs to be improved as the result of exhaust gases pollution caused by urban traffic congestion and energy dissipation. In the research field of traffic signal control, theoretical researches of new algorithm and new strategy have obtained great achievements, yet the application is scanty. This kind of irrational divorce between theoretical research and practical use is quite obvious in China. Traditionally, testing and analyzing of new control algorithm merely rely on traffic simulation software, which can only simulate ideal traffic environment, however, lack of scientificity and efficiency in practical application. As a result, it is not enough to convince developers to adopt such new techniques.To shorten study and test time of new theory, new method and new technology, and fully test the scientificity and efficiency of research results, further improve core technology of traffic signal control system, the thesis targeted on isolated signal control, which adopts hardware-in-loop simulating technology to put forward traffic signal control experimental platform based on ARM and LINUX. The experimental platform uses PC operate microscopic traffic simulation software to simulate traffic environment. Open traffic signal controller provides traffic signal for simulate traffic environment from where returned with test data. Communications between PC and traffic signal controller are realized through the RS232serial interface.The experimental platform is composed of open signal controller, traffic simulation software and communication program. ARM9processor and the embedded LINUX operating system completed hardware and software design of open traffic signal controller, of which offered programming interface for users to independently develop the isolated control strategy. The platform uses the widely-known microscopic traffic simulation software VISSIM develop Visual C++communication program, then establish real-time communication between traffic simulation software and hardware and software of traffic signal control system by using serial data and VISSIM Dynamic-Link Library.
