| Like in many megacities in developing countries,informal settlements are commonly found throughout Jakarta,the capital of Indonesia.Many urban villages in Jakarta are subject to eviction.They are usually being replaced by another shopping mall.The problem of kampong in the city is not a physical problem.Poverty could not be solved only by spatial planning.The problem of kampong is multifaceted,it is not merely spatial but it is rooted in social,economic,cultural,and political matters.It involves much deeper layer of research in order to be able to create a long-term solution.This thesis will focus on typologies configuration and space-use in the informal kampong settlements in Jakarta.Taking further consideration in relationship between the social-activities and the configuration of space as the basis for discussion,the case study of local kampong will be used to see the informal settlement in two ways;on its own and in relation with the city as a whole.Being centrally located in the city nowadays,in many occasions literally side by side the city’s most important and prestigious business districts,the kampongs are facing particular challenges.In one hand,they are gaining the economic opportunities,on the other hand their existence is threatened by it.The topic of informal settlement is not new at all;there are many researches done surrounding the issue.This thesis begins by introducing the urban informal of Jakarta city due to its history as colonial city.Then it goes on to analyze successes and failures of space-use configuration using a case study,followed by recommendation approach to deal with the problem.The research also recognizes the complexity of describing the term informal settlement.Here the term refers to the non formally-planned urban settlement that houses the urban under-class which has poor state of infrastructures,facility and spatial quality.By investigating the dynamic of urban kampong in term of its interaction with the city and mechanism of survival,the research aims to reveal its opportunities and potentialities towards its empowerment.The research intends to produce a set of guidelines and suggestion that could be used by urban planners,local authority and other decision makers,to formulate the strategies to solve the problem of informal settlements. |
