A Study On Productive Community For The Elderly

Our country has a large population base and a rapid growth rate.By 2050,the population over the age of 60 will reach about 440 million,accounting for 1/3 of the total population."Not getting rich before the age" is the main characteristic of China's population aging,and the way of providing entertainment based on leisure and entertainment will cause great burden to the society,and it is not sustainable.However,the study of the retirement community pays more attention to the quality and scope of the provision of nursing services.In the future,older people don't just need to be taken care of,they are eager to achieve self-worth.this paper proposes a research question: under the sustainable environment,what kind of pension mode and living circumstances for supporting the aged will it be to fit in a sustainable society,which is able to meet needs of the aged and reduce the society's burden?This paper adopts a combined method of literature research and logical argument to reason the connotation and denotation of “productive supporting mode” in terms of relationship between city's productivity and the aged' productivity.Furthermore,this paper discusses the productive potential of the aged and its correlation among retirement community,the city building's productivity and productive aging and elaborates the concept and content of productive retirement community from the view of distribution and design strategy.Moreover,employed with qualitative and quantitative research method,this paper conducts a questionnaire survey on a representative community in Hefei,a province of China to analyze the current situation and influenced factors of the old people's engagement in productive activities.At last,applied with case study research method and combined with the district's cultural and economic background,this paper chooses two representative cases separately from Singapore's high-density community and Western low-density community to explore the productive method implied in these two retirement communities and reaches a conclusion.With an aim to present the change of view from retirement community to productive retirement community and to broaden research scope and vision,This paper conducts an interdisciplinary study including architecture,urban planning,landscaping,sociology and demography and explores the aged supporting mode and construction mode of retirement community for the future China in a sustainable context.Based on productive city and productive aging theories,this paper presents“productive supporting mode” and “productive retirement community” under the circumstance of home-based care for the aged.It is believed that the “productive supporting” is a sustainable old-aged caring mode which suits for China's future society and caters to the seniors' general social and behavior characteristics.Also as a sustainable community construction mode,“productive retirement community” adapts to pensioners' need in China by providing them a sustainable retirement career.Hopefully this paper can help to promote the development of related research and shed some light on theoretical study on human settlement.
