Fe-Mn based damping steel has the characteristics of low cost,good damping capacity and excellent mechanical properties.It is expected to be applied to the ship structure to meet the demand of vibration and noise reduction.In this paper,the effect of Mn content and quenching temperature on the damping properties,microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe-Mn based damping steel was studied.A method for measuring the damping capacity of materials was proposed by using large-size samples.Fe-Mn based damping steel were compared with the steel D36 which is used for ship structure.The results show that the Fe-Mn based damping steel has the best damping capacity when the Mn content is 17% and the quenching temperature is 950?.DMA test results show that when the test amplitude is 50?m and the vibration frequency is 140 Hz,the value of tan? is as high as 0.0163,which is 1.4 times of that of D36 steel.It was also found that the damping performance of Fe-Mn steels increased linearly with the increase of the test amplitude.The damping performance of Fe-17 Mn in 100 ~ 200Hz(low frequency)is better than that of D36 steel.The average response acceleration(the index of damping capacity)of Fe-17 Mn steel counts for 40-77% of that of D36 steel.Fe-17 Mn damping steel is expected to become ship construction materials.
