Research On Rockery Designing And Making In Mustard Seed Garden Of East Zhonghua Gate In Nan-Jing

According to the historical records of Jinling Mustard Seed Garden,the planning project of the Nanjing Mustard Seed Garden aims to recreate the famous garden through the construction of Jiangnan private garden,which Li Yu built during his life in Nanjing.Rockery is the key point of the design of Nanjing Mustard Seed Garden.The rockery has the function of making scenery,it is also the representative of the essence of classical garden culture,and it is the concentrated expression of the garden designing idea,which can represent the aesthetic thought of garden “based on nature,higher than nature”.Li Yu recorded the method of garden construction in“Ju-Shi”part of his book“Xian Qing Ou-Ji ”,mostly based on the construction of Jinling Mustard Seed Garden,which also described the rockery,and summarized the theory of rockery making.The rockery of Nanjing Mustard Seed Garden is constructed on the basis of following Li Yu’s designing idea,through painting,pursuing the dynamic trend of life as the basic principle,combining realistic and freehand brushwork,thus achieving the natural true mountain environment naturally.Rockery making technology of Jiangnan classical garden improved continuously in the historical process,formed a broad and profound art system.Previous generations of scholars have also studied the rockery in classical garden,but few of them focused on the design method and the specific construction process,lacking technical elaboration.On the basis of studying the source and stream of rockery development and the method of rockery making,the author read “Xian Qing Ou-Ji”“Li Yu Quan-Ji”and relevant historical documents,found description about the rockery in Jinling Mustard Seed Garden and summarized.Finally,put the layout and Li Yu’s designing idea into practice on the concrete rockery making.In this paper,Rockery designing and making in Mustard Seed Garden of East Zhonghua Gate are discussed in detail,the design idea and layout are described,and the construction process which started from stone selection to rockery making is recorded.After all,the characteristics and innovation of the rockery are summarized.The author hopes to provide practical help for the rockery making in the future,and expects more professional technical articles of rockery making comes into being,theory and practice complement each other.
