With the rapid development of cities, increased residence in high-rise and high-density buildings have enhanced the conflict and the problem of daylighting and sheltering. An appropriate amount of natural light is regarded as positive for the quality of life and mental health of individuals. It is regarded as an extension of ownership, which is of great significance to the realization of ownership of real estate. However, the ambiguity of the legal provisions caused technical problems in the description and calculation of solar rights of each housing unit. This study presents a 3D data model that incorporates a range of data elements to represent the temporal-spatial extent of solar rights in the context of the current legal system of China. The proposed model provides a consistent method for the spatial representation and calculation of lighting rights.Using existing legal stipulations and spatial features, solar rights are classified into solar easements and neighbouring solar rights, which are separately described by geometric elements developed from the relevant legal stipulations. In addition, the geometric elements of the model are systematically integrated with existing property elements to enable the description of solar rights associated with individual residential properties.Besides, three methods of the Window-Based method,Room-Based method,Suit-Based method are proposed for the quantitative calculation of sunlight duration. To enable the use of this model in a wide range of applications, the model is extended from the Land Administration Domain Model(LADM)and implemented using CityGML application domain extensions(ADEs).The experiments described in this study demonstrate the utility of the 3D data model for the spatial clarification of the solar rights associated with individual 3D properties, providing a technical support for improving the management of solar rights.
