Sustainability is currently an international agenda.Sustainable development has become widely adopted especially in developed countries and various systems have been created to reach sustainability goals as in the area of design and building construction projects in particular.Bulked with various socio-economic problems like poverty, countries in Sub Saharan Africa also suffer a lot from the impact of climate change with some of the effects emanating from the Urban-growing building construction projects. The efforts to speed up sustainability and maintain the sustainable development in Africa on the other hand is rarely unnoticeable compared to those found in developed world.Globally Building Construction practitioners are starting to recognize sustainability and acknowledge the relevance of implementing sustainable principles in building projects.Studies show that sustainable buildings will contribute positively to better quality of life, work efficiency and healthy work environment.Tanzania is experiencing a tremendous boom in Building construction sector as economic growth notices in her largest city Dar es Salaam especially within Central business district of Ilala which represent the country main economic and social center.Following its rapid growth, the center is attracting new building construction projects, offices, hotels, and residential apartment buildings(EECDP,2014).Despite the fact that there are mushrooming of high rise building construction projects in the center of Ilala findings shows that couple of barriers such as poor understanding of the concept of SB in building construction project, the notion of investment cost, weak policies and regulations have given pace to unsustainable building construction practices in Ilala CBD.The general purpose of this thesis is to create awareness to key practitioners in built environment especially project managers regarding sustainability in BCPs,to ensure the achievement of the quality delivery sustainability goals in Tanzania. The focus is how better key BCP practitioners in Ilala CBD can manage to integrate sustainability concept to the design, planning and execution of the BCP processes. For the case, the study explores barriers impeding the adoption of Sustainability in building construction projects in Ilala Urban Centre and at the same time examines the drivers for promoting sustainable BCPs at municipal level and Tanzania as well. This research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to gather the relevant data for Ilala Central Business District. The information was obtained via, questionnaire survey, expert interviews and document review on past studies pertaining to barriers and drivers of SBCPs in developing countries.
