The classical gardens in the south of the Yangtze River have an important position and research value in the development history of Chinese gardens, and are the treasures of Chinese classical gardens. The classical gardens still have very high academic and social value in the contemporary society for the construction of the space environment, the reasonable grasp of the space scale and the organic organization of the space sequence. The classical gardens in the south of the Yangtze River integrate various art forms and draw wisdom from various traditional arts. Therefore,it can be said that the classical gardens in the south of the Yangtze River are a meticulous and complex system. If we study it,we can find a point from the complex system for in-depth study.Taking the concept of spatial sequence as the breakthrough point, this paper takes the typical cases of classical gardens and modern exhibition buildings in Jiangnan as the research object.By introducing the concept of spatial prototype, the spatial sequence of classical gardens and modern exhibition buildings in Jiangnan is extracted and compared. In order to find out the similarities and differences in spatial characteristics between classical gardens and modern exhibition buildings in Jiangnan, and provide a new way of thinking for modern architectural creation. The research content of this paper is divided into three parts. The first part analyses the concept of spatial sequence and spatial prototype, and defines that the spatial prototype of architecture includes four levels: spatial unit, morphological unit, architectural stratification and architectural space.Through the concept interpretation and the introduction of spatial sequence extraction methods, the spatial sequence extraction methods of classical gardens in Jiangnan and typical cases of modern exhibition buildings are elaborated respectively. Then it explains the method of comparing the spatial sequence of two kinds of buildings according to the type of spatial organization of buildings. Finally, how to transform the spatialsequence of the building into the "time-space openness relationship map" and "time-space scale relationship map" is expounded. The second part extracts the spatial sequence of typical cases of classical gardens and modern exhibition buildings, and draws the spatial sequence map. Then, according to the method of transforming spatial sequence into relation graph discussed above, the time-space openness relation map,time-space scale relation map of classical gardens and modern exhibition buildings in Jiangnan are drawn respectively. The third part is the process of analysis and comparison of five groups of spatial sequence diagrams and relationship diagrams of classical gardens and modern exhibition buildings in Jiangnan, which are obtained by the method of spatial sequence extraction and relationship diagrams. It also summarizes four types of spatial sequence organization: multi-dominant space + circular path,multi-dominant space + penetrating path,single-dominant space +penetrating path, homogeneous space + comprehensive path.Through the above analysis method, the characteristics of spatial sequence organization of two types of buildings can be obtained. And how to create the desired space atmosphere and space experience purposefully through the setting of space openness, space scale, side interface permeability and the organic combination of these elements.
