Wuhan metropolitan area is connected with Dabie Mountain in the north,Mufu Mountain in the south, and contains the Jianghan plain in the middle. It spans eight large or medium-sized cities, including Huanggang,Xiaogan,Huangshi,Xianning,Ezhou,Xiantao,Qianjiang and Tianmen, with an area of about 58,000 km2.It is an important distribution center on the immigration routes such as “Jiangxi people fill Hubei and Hunan” and has a unique natural and cultural landscape. With the acceleration of globalization and urbanization, the living environment of traditional settlements has been improved, but at the same time, the unique natural and cultural landscape of settlements has also been seriously damaged. The study aims to construct a research framework for the identification of traditional settlement landscape characteristics based on integrated protection from three levels, including the identification and classification of landscape character types at the regional level, the zoning of traditional settlement landscapes, and the identification of landscape characteristics at the settlement level. Finally, the protection strategies of the whole region, the landscape partition and the settlement level are proposed. The results can be used as a basis to support the protection and management of cross-regional settlements. At the regional level, based on the ArcGIS platform,30 landscape character types were identified by Superimposing 3 landscape character factors attribute data including altitude, relief amplitude and land cover. The identification of landscape character type provides basis for trans-regional protection and management of traditional settlements, and provide necessary preconditions for the integrated protection of traditional settlements in Wuhan Metropolitan Area. Then the region was divided into three landscape sensitivity types on the analysis of landscape sensitivity based on ArcGIS,and different protection strategies were put forward for protected areas. The traditional settlements mainly distributed in the distribution center of the cultural routes with obvious spatial concentration, and closely relating to land cover, slope and relief amplitude.76 traditional settlements and 73 cultural relics protection units were used as sample sources. Then the Minimum Cumulative Resistance(MCR)model was used to analyze the suitability of the region, based on which, three levels including core protected area, buffer area and marginal area were identified to protect the traditional settlements. And,according to the continuity, integrity and the systemic principle, the boundaries of the settlement landscape are identified by manual discrimination, which are the northeast, the east, and the southeast. Finally, the traditional settlement distribution map, landscape protection zoning and the region suitability zoning were superimposed to further classify the traditional settlements and obtain a scientific and reasonable management and protection system.Based on desk research and field survey, nature, culture, and ethnic characteristics information were collected.Firstly, landscape characteristics of the single region were identified, and then typical cases were selected for detailed identification and description. Finally, the landscape protection strategies shared by the regions are proposed firstly, and then the landscape characteristics protection strategies of the settlement scales were discussed from the perspectives of nature, culture, and ethnic. The three elements covered the material state of the settlement, the perceived state of people, and realized the comprehensive and multiangular protection of the traditional settlements.
