Analysis On The Origin Of Chinese Garden Construction

The theory of Chinese painting and the theory of Chinese garden construction are essentially in one continuous line.There are interoperable methods and principles for the creation of artistic conception in terms of creative principles,aesthetic style and functional requirements.In the centuries-old history of Chinese gardening,most of the gardening activities are based on landscape painting as a reference,painting theory as a creative technique,which concentrates the natural landscape in mind in the garden and expresses the feelings in the heart.It is not uncommon for literati and painters to directly participate in gardening activities in the history of gardening.With their participation,gardens have been injected into the literati’s thinking and the artist’s style of writing,thus creating a "literati garden".With the development of time,the artistic conception dominated by paintings of different times has exerted an important influence in the garden with a long history.Gardeners often follow the principle of painting,and most of the important gardeners in the late Ming Dynasty are proficient in painting.Wen Zhengming(AD1470-1559),a painter of the Ming Dynasty,wrote "Thirty-one Scenes of Humble Administrator’s Garden" which is well preserved.To a great extent,it shows us the early stage of the construction of the Humble Administrator’s Park.At the same time,along with the historical evolution of Humble Administrator’s Garden,we gradually see that from the beginning,more emphasis has been placed on the pastoral artistic conception,which gradually changes into the complex and luxurious atmosphere.Combining with landscape painting theory,we can see the similarities between painting pairs and garden construction methods and artistic conception more directly.These similarities are not only the guidance of landscape painting for the creation of landscape artistic conception,but also the guidance of the distribution of spatial elements.Mutually complementary,gardens are also a three-dimensional display of landscape painting,which better interprets the spatial characteristics of "painting into gardens,literati freehand brushwork".Through this comparison and exploration,we find and learn how to infiltrate the advantages of traditional private gardens into the design of modern landscape architecture.Humble Administrator’s Garden occupies an important position in the history of gardens.It is the representative of Suzhou Garden and an important part of Chinese gardens research.This paper combines the Chinese landscape painting theory and works,the gardening techniques and examples of Humble Administrator’s Garden,and studies and analyses the reference and influence of Chinese traditional painting on the construction of Humble Administrator’s Garden.
