| As a tool of movement and an important part of city’s transport system,bike plays a positive role in improving public health and accords to the sustainable development pattern of city.Different from the long-lasting Cycling Renaissance which dates back to half a century ago in Europe,China is on the starting point and crucial phase of its own Cycling Renaissance.Currently,the main focus of China’s literature about cycling environment is on influence factors of built environment,few study has put the attention on those of social environment and those of natural environment.Literature review and case study are used as main research methods in this paper,the theoretical system of cycling-friendly environment is put forward in this paper on the basis of both English and Chinese literature,which means a lot for China’s forthcoming practices in this field.Firstly,three environmental influence factors of cycling behaviour(natural environment,social environment,built environment)are presented along with six influence factors of bicycle transport(geography and climate of city,cyclist’s traits,social effect and cycling culture,policy intervene,urban form,cycling infrastructure),in order to establish the theoretical system of cycling-friendly environment.Secondly,three cycling-friendly cities(Copenhagen,Amsterdam,Tokyo)are chose as cases in line with the established theoretical system,and analysed to further enhancing the theory.Finally,Shenzhen——a megacity in China,is chose to apply the theory by discussing the strategies that can be used to improve the cycling environment of three aspects(natural environment,social environment,built environment)in the city.The finding of study as follow: the effect of natural environment factors is limited in Shenzhen,the potential barriers of hot and rainy weather that cause decline on cycling rate can be partly eliminated by intervenes of built environment;In terms of social environment,the “New Cycling Culture” has not yet attracted enough attention among people in Shenzhen,and the long-term evaluation mechanism in Shenzhen’s cycling strategy system has not beenestablished;In terms of built environment,the city’s block pattern is in urgent need to be optimized,and the cycling infrastructure handbook improved.Base on the study above,the proposal as follow: three aspects of cycling environment(natural environment,social environment,built environment)should all be thoroughly considered when it comes to form a cycling-friendly environment for the city,among which,natural environment factors that impede cycling should be eliminated to a great extent,and cycling-friendly social and build environment should be established in the long run.Take Shenzhen for example,cycling facilities that remit uncomfortableness of using a bike in hot or raining weather should be presented in Shenzhen;the new cycling culture should be encouraged;the long-term evaluation mechanism should be included in Shenzhen’s cycling strategy system;more academic studies about the land use pattern in surrounding areas of a station are needed;the cycling infrastructure handbook should be improved;more discussion should focus on the possibility of building“cycling street” in China’s open community. |
