This paper takes Palmer & Turner's works as examples in order to study on the rise of the modernism architectural thought in Shanghai modern architecture.Through the analysis of the specific case and comparing with the characteristics of the western architectural thought of the corresponding period,I explore the background,methods and uniqueness of the transforming of Shanghai modern architectural form from the revivalism to the modernism.Hope to provide theoretical support for the protection and re-use of Shanghai modern architecture.This article vein goes from practice to theory and then back to practice,from the case to the generality and to the individual case.Elaborate and analysis the rise of the modernism architectural thought in Shanghai which is represented by the Palmer & Turner's works.Demonstrate the above analysis with the Palmer & Turner's works in turn.This paper consists of six chapters:The first chapter describes the significance,methods of this research and the framework of the whole paper.The second chapter introduces the historical background of modern architecture in Shanghai and the important role and work classification of the Palmer & Turner's works after entering Shanghai.In the third chapter,the author summarizes and puts forward the proposition of the development of modern architecture in Shanghai by comparing the development of the architectural thoughts in both western and Shanghai at the same time.The fourth chapter demonstrate the proposition through inspecting and the analyzing the Palmer & Turner's works of three different historical stages.The fifth chapter puts forward suggestions on the protection and renewal of modern architecture.The sixth chapter summarizes the full text.
