Evaluating Service Quality Of City Bus Based On Users' Preferences

The operation of public transit transportation is one of several governments' efforts to solve several transportation problems,especially congestion.Improving the quality of service of each mode is an important point,if we are going to change peoples' daily transportation habits.Bus Rapid Transit is one of public transit option offered by the government.When public transit transportation runs and manage effectively,efficiently,and sustainably,this could hold the promise to reduce congestion level.Many evaluation methods can be used to evaluate,to improve service quality offered by public transit transportation.This dissertation applied comparative study from two cities(Jakarta and Dalian)as a study case.By using Multinomial Logit Regression and Kruskall Wallis H Test,this dissertation aims to evaluate what is an attribute of Bus Rapid Transit that become as a significant factor for the commuter in choosing transportation mode,and find which attribute that significantly valued different by each type of commuter.The study revealed that payment system,accessibility to seat,special concern to the elderly /disable people,bus stop cleanliness,and real time bus schedule availability on the bus stop are the significant attributes for Jakarta's BRT,then Cost of fare,Payment system,On bus facilities condition,Mechanical condition of vehicles,Driver kindness,Safety from traffic accidents,On bus cleanliness and Bus stop cleanliness are become as an attributes that significantly valued different by each type of commuter in Jakarta.For Dalian's BRT,the significant attributes of level of service are Availability of bus,at trip origin and destination,In vehicle time,Walking time,Cost of fare,How simple transport connection,Mechanical condition of vehicles,Crowded level,Access to seat,Driver handling,Safe at the bus stop,Safe at night,and Bus stop cleanliness.Furthermore,payment system and safe at the bus stop are become as an attributes that significantly valued different by each type of commuter in Dalian.Based on this research,the government and BRT operator in each city can get more insights about which factors are significant factors for travelers.These insights will be meaningful for the local bus rapid transit operator to improve their service quality in order to encourage more people to use their modes.Thus,the local government can take suitable measures to reduce the number of private vehicles so that the level of road congestion can be decreased.
