Shikumen buildings which represented the traditional inhabitation form of Shanghai recently suffered serious damage in the large-scale urban construction.It caused urban context gradually be broken,memory places are dying day by day.Zhang's Garden,located in Jing'an District of Shanghai,is one of the typical Shikumen residence,which has a very high protection value and be classified in the historic conservation area of Shanghai.Although there are some studies about Zhang's Garden traditional living pattern,researches on residents' activities and behavior from the perspective of environmental behavior is limited.From this perspective,this paper carried out a detailed investigation and analysis on the environment and space usage of Zhang's Garden survey field,in order to provide the basic data and reliable reference basis for the further study and future conservation and renewal of Shikumen buildings.This research took the Zhang's Garden as a case study,through behavior observation and interview,doing a detailed investigation on the indoor and outdoor environment of Zhang's Garden,and discussing the relationship between traditional Shikumen spatial environment and people's behavior.This study found out that there are rich activities in the lanes which showing the characteristics of diversity and continuity and having a close relationship with the environment,on the other hand,the occupation in the lanes are relatively serious,that is a big problem which is not allowed to be ignored;Because of the limitation of the area,the phenomenon of interference exists in the usage of indoor space,and the occupation makes the living environment comparatively not ideal.On the basis of that this research is also trying to put forward a protection andrenewal suggestions of traditional Shikumen residence which is suitable for the present city develop situation.
