Research On The Relationship Between Energy Consumption And Economic Growth In Jilin Province

Energy is the lifeblood of national development.Reasonable energy consumption can bring high-quality economic growth.Unreasonable energy consumption can also bring economic growth in the short term,but it cannot guarantee the quality of economic growth.Jilin Province consumes a large amount of energy in the process of economic development,and energy consumption has also driven economic growth.However,with the development pattern featured with “ high energy consumption,high pollution,and low efficiency ” has brought many problems such as environmental pollution,and it has become the bottleneck of future economic development in Jilin Province.Therefore,scientifically grasping the conjunction between them in Jilin Province has far-reaching significance for the realization of sustainable economic and social development to Jilin Province.Based on this,Firstly the study described the energy consumption and economic growth in Jilin Province from 1990 to 2017.After using the two indicators of energy consumption intensity and energy consumption elasticity coefficient,the two preliminary correlations were obtained.Secondly,cointegration test,Granger causality test and modified error model were carried out for verifying the relationship between Jilin Province’s energy consumption with its structure and economic growth under the framework of the three-factor production model that introduces energy factor.The empirical results show that there is a two-way Granger causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in Jilin Province.Energy consumption has a significant positive effect on promoting economic growth,which means that Jilin Province is a typical energy-dependent economy.In the correlation between energy consumption structure and economic growth: oil consumption and coal consumption have the most significant impact on economic growth.There is a two-way Granger causal relationship between oil consumption and economic growth.Coal consumption is the Granger cause of economic growth.Moreover,Economic growth is the Granger cause of natural gas consumption,but natural gas consumption has little effect on economic growth.Electricity consumption is the Granger cause of economic growth,but power consumption has a negative effect on economic growth,indicating that power consumption and economic growth have deviated.Based on the empirical results and combined with descriptive analysis,Jilin Province has problems such as the close connection between economic growth and energy consumption,and the irrational structure of energy consumption.Finally,in order to coordinate the sound and stable development of the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in Jilin Province,we propose targeted recommendations from the three perspectives of“ transformation ”,“ optimization ” and “ open source ”,namely,building an energy-saving economic society,promoting the adjustment of energy consumption to the direction of green and low carbon,and vigorously developing new energy industries.
