With the rapid development of urban public transportation, the construction of walkable cities has become the main trend of urban planning and design. As an effective extension of urban commercial functions, the external pedestrian environment of the urban central business district should be coupled with the urban environment while creating the commercial atmosphere. As an important part of the urban pedestrian network system,it should complement the urban space with resources. However,at present, most of the urban central business districts have a single form of external pedestrian environment space that is disjointed from the urban space, and some of the space continuity and accessibility are poor, and the pedestrian environment is negative, which makes it difficult to provide users with comfortable, safe and pleasant walking experience. In the face of this problem, this article embarks from the perspective of "efficiency",using the input and output of operation mode, will form the city center business district outside walking environment an important part of the two-"activity" and "physical environment"-as the main research object, studies the relationship between, explore the physical environment on behavior potential mechanism,in order to put forward from the perspective of efficiency optimization strategy.Firstly, the definition, constitution and organizational structure of the external pedestrian environment of the urban central business district are introduced in detail. On this basis, the behavioral activities carried by the pedestrian environment are sorted out,and the relevant theories of environmental impact on individual behavior are sorted out.Starting from the action mechanism of environment and behavior, the material elements in the pedestrian environment of the business district are summarized as diversity, connectivity and place-orientation.Then,based on the study of urban central business district the external environment on foot, defines the pedestrian environment space efficiency,it can be divided into configuration, structure, efficiency, productivity, and one-to-one correspondence with the above three physical environment characteristics, respectively, describes the characteristics of every space corresponds to the physical environment of indicators, the establishment of a complete pedestrian environment space efficiency model. Then choose three different spatial structure of commercial external environment as a case study on foot,to formulate appropriate way of case analysis, material characterization of environmental factors and the activities of its building quantitative measure, respectively,to calculate pedestrian environment space efficiency, test the correlation, for inspection result analysis of the activities of each factor is sensitive or not, summarize the regional external pedestrian environment space efficiency. Finally, based on the efficiency analysis, the optimization objective of the external walking environment efficiency of the urban central business district is proposed, and the four principles of symbiosis, polysemy, effectiveness and humanization are proposed around the objective to formulate the optimization strategy of the external walking environment efficiency comprehensively. The strategy starts from the spatial efficiency composition, which is embodied in the optimized combination and reasonable allocation of resources, the improvement of pedestrian network and spatial structure, and the improvement of pedestrian environment spatial quality, hoping to provide some reference basis for the design of the external pedestrian environment of the urban central business district in the future...
