The reconstruction of the spatial landscape caused by globalization and urbanization is constantly impacting local culture.As a kind of recognizable cultural symbol,landscape is continuously used in the construction and renewal of cities.Urban planners complete their imagination of the city through remodeling the landscape,and people reconstruct their understanding of the city through their re-interpretation of the cultural meaning of the landscape.People construct emotional connection with place in the frequent interaction with landscape.The emotional connection is critical to local sustainable development.This paper focuses on the landscape of the Soochow Dushu Lake Science and Education Innovation Zone,and try to explores the relationship between landscape and sense of place.This paper develops from following three parts:the crisis of sense of place,the local imagination of the landscape,the practice and experience of the sense of place.There are three findings:(1)The reconstruction of landscape caused by the land relocation entails the crisis of people’s sense of place.(2)In response to the crisis,the urban planners try to rebuild the sense of place through remodeling the landscape.They are trying to reshape Dushu Lake Science and Education Innovation District into a place of modernization,cultural deposits,and high-quality daily life.Nevertheless,conflicts and division are still existing in the landscape’s cultural meaning.(3)The cultural meaning imposed on the landscape cannot promote the construction of sense of place.Whether landscape can promote people’s interaction and enrich people’s memory and emotional experience is crucial to the construction of people’s sense of place.
