with the rapid development of our country’s economy,people’s material living standards are getting higher and higher and people’s life expectancy is also becoming longer and longer.On the one hand,the extension of the lifespan of the population is glorifying;on the other hand,it is one of the important factors leading to the aging problem of our country.In the context of severely aging populations,the institute for the glorious,an elderly-care institution for the retired soldiers,has ushered in new developments,opportunities and challenges.In order to alleviate the country ’s burden of cares for the retired servicemen,people accepted by the institute for the glorious are no longer limited to Red Army men and family members of Red Army martyrs,aged veterans,family members of revolutionary martyrs as well as disabled soldiers in active service are admitted.With the increase in the number of occupants in the nursing home,the decoration and design concept of the indoor and outdoor space is required to not only reflect humanistic care,but embody ex-servicemen’s red feelings.Based on this design philosophy,the author conducted field research on the institutes for the glorious in Wuling mountain area and found some existing problems.The design for public space and private space of nursing houses in these residential areas is unreasonable which makes the living space is not very comfortable.Meanwhile,the elderly people’s life is lacking in red culture and spiritual culture.It is known that the institutes for the glorious are supposed to not only provide special care for elderly veterans,but they also carry the mission of promoting the red culture.How to make the living space in the institutes for the glorious not only offer good care for the elderly but also meet their spiritual needs through the layout of red culture elements,and how to let the youth and other people experience red culture to recall memorable years are the main problems to be solved in this thesis.This paper first briefly describes the research background and the purpose of the study on residential space of institutes for the glorious,and puts forward how to combine the residential space of special groups with red culture to innovate the spatial function.Secondly,according to the relevant theories of ergonomics,environmental psychology and Maslow’s humanistic philosophy,this paper summarizes the characteristics of psychological needs,physiological needs,security needs,social needs and needs to be respected of the retired elderly soldiers in order to conduct the humanization design for the space function in accordance with these characteristics.Thirdly,through the analysis of the symbols of the red cultural elements,the red theme design elements are applied to the space design of the institutes for the glorious to carry out innovative design of space modeling,so that the space function can both make the elderly live a comfortable and easy life and show the spirit of red culture inheritance.Finally,this paper selects the case of the nursing house in Hongjiaguan Township,Sangzhi County,Zhangjiajie City,Hunan Province,to carry out the design practice.The paper is aiming at solving the problems discussed above through the second design of the space in the nursing house and further expounds the key design points in functional renovation of the residential space of the institute for the glorious.And the relevant design concepts with the theme of red cultural symbols are obtained to carryout the space modeling and decoration of the nursing houses.It is hoped that this paper will provide a good theoretical and practical reference for the design of the institutes for the glorious sharing the same regional culture.
