SBS modified asphalt is currently the major option for the high-grade motorway construction worldwide.However,the production and processing of SBS modified asphalt requires expensive equipments and the final products of the SBS modified asphalt is still generally segregated during storage and transportation.Driving by a several million tons/y domestic market demand of the modified asphalt,a polymer modified asphalt solutions with small equipment investment,simple process,reliable road performance,environmental protection and energy saving has been a research hotspot in this field.This paper is inspired by the research ideas of reactive polymer modified asphalt,an Ethylene-Octene copolymer grafted Methacrylic acid-Glycidyl ester,called POE-g-GMA grafted polymer is considered and slected as asphalt modifier.Three kinds of imported 70# matrix asphalt which are suitable for the geographical and climatic characteristics of South China region were chosen for following experiments.The modified asphalt samples were prepared in terms of the blending ratio of POE-g-GMA modifier by 1.5%,3.0% and 5.0%.Referring to "JTG E20-2011 Highway Engineering Asphalt and Asphalt Mixture Test Regulations",the performance and characteristics of POE-g-GMA modified asphalt were evaluated through the relevant test methods such as conventional asphalt tests,dynamic shear rheology test,rotary film oven aging test,storage stability test and etc.as well as comparing the performance with the commercialized SBS modified asphalt.According to the test results,it can be seen that the usage of POE-g-GMA polymer can significantly reduce the of matrix asphalt,30% reduction of the penetration,compaered between the matrix asphalt and 5.0% POE-g-GMA modified asphalt;20% reduction of the penetration compared with 4.8% SBS modified asphalt;the rutting factors of three aspahlts were increased by 2.1times,3.8times and 2.7times between the dosage of 1.5% and 5.0% POE-g-GMA modified asphalt.But according to the ductility test result,the usage of POE-g-GMA modifier will have a negetive effect on asphalt's ductility.Based on the knowledge of the chemical structure of POE-g-GMA modifier,the principle of chemical reaction between POE-g-GMA graft polymer and matrix asphalt was verified by the observation of fluorescence microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy from microstructural changes,which also indicated the asphalt modification mechanism.The usage of Matlab software which calculated the area raito of POE-g-GMA modifier in matrix helps to disclose the relationship of the microstructure of modified asphalt and its macroscopic properties,and the modification mechanism of POE-g-GMA graft polymer is further elaborated.Considering the poor result of POE-g-GMA polymer in ductility test,the characteristics of the composite formulation of POE-g-GMA polymer and SBS modified asphalt were also preliminary studied to enrich and expand the application prospect of POE-gGMA modifier in the road construction industry.Finally,the economic and social benefits of POE-g-GMA modifier are comprehensively analyzed.Based on the current raw materials costs,a 65RMB/MT cot saving was obtained,compared between SBS modified asphalt and POE-gGMA modified asphalt,which shows good economic benefit.
