From the angle of transforming economic development mode and constructing energy-saving society, this paper makes an empirical study on the relationship between regional energy consumption and urbanization.Based on the panel data of total energy consumption and urbanization rate of 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions(excluding Tibet)from 2007 to 2017,this paper analyzes the trends of energy consumption and urbanization from horizontal and vertical perspectives. The results show that urbanization has a dynamic economic threshold effect on energy consumption in different stages of economic development, and there are two economic thresholds. When the economic development crosses the first threshold, the promotion effect of urbanization on energy consumption is obviously enhanced;when the economic development crosses the second threshold, the impact coefficient of urbanization on energy consumption is enhanced, and the speed tends to slow down, and the promotion effect of urbanization on energy consumption is significant.Urbanization has a stronger role in promoting energy consumption in the eastern region than in the central and western regions. At present, most regions have crossed the second GDP threshold. In the long run, urbanization has a restraining effect on the growth rate of energy consumption. Finally, according to the conclusion of this paper, the paper puts forward the policy recommendations of economic growth mode and energy consumption strategic planning.
