The Dong minority village of Gaobu, one of the candidates on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List,is a typical southern Dong settlement.Due to its remote location, most of the features and techniques of Dong wooden architecture are fully preserved. But with the modernization of life styles, the wooden dwellings are gradually failing to meet the demands of the villagers’ daily needs, especially with the deficiency or defective of sanitation spaces in traditional dwellings, further intensified the contradiction of the two aspects. On the other hand, with the development of towns and transportation, villagers are voluntarily using modern techniques to construct functional houses which meets the necessary daily usage such as toilets and bathrooms within the traditional dwellings. Some of them even reconstructed their wooden dwellings completely into concrete buildings.Such compelling renovations are one of the problems faced by traditional Dong villages in the southwest, awaiting to be solved.Taking drastic measures to rebuild the sanitation spaces in traditional dwellings had not only damaged the traditional scene of the village, but also destroyed the building techniques which existed in the wooden dwellings, which made it more difficult to preserve and inherit the traditional Dong architectures. This article attempts to start with the sanitation space, and explore the low-tech renewal direction of traditional houses on the basis of protection. It investigated the current situation of Gaobu and its sanitation space by document collation, field investigation and monitoring. Then it established the necessity and the principles of adaptive renovation. The particularity and necessity of adaptive renovation is mainly related to the long-term self-updating of dwellings. The existing problems after this process mainly include building physical performance problems, function zoning problems, indoor facility problems, and outdoor sewage problems. The principles and standards of adaptive renovation can guide the following updating methods. In order to solve the problems caused by the self-updating,the article proposed overall design adjustment, interior layout optimization, material upgrades, and ecological technology implementation based on monitoring analysis, software simulation and case studies, hoping to provide new ideas for the protection and activation of traditional Dong houses.
