As an important symbol of ethnic identification, traditional dwellings are the heart ofnational lifestyle. Vernacular dwellings not only have a close relationship with the nationaleconomic development status, living standard and national incomes, but also have closeassociations with their customs, religions and ideology. The understanding of nature and theawareness of national itself can be seen from the style, material and building custom of thevernacular dwelling. The study of traditional dwellings may serve as one side which canreveal the national development process of understanding, transforming and living inharmony with nature.Architectural culture, which is the result of the influence of human environment, has itsunique object and connotation. Human environment in different regions create vernaculardwellings have different regional features. Conversely, a human environment with regionalcharacteristics, which correspond with the cultural life of the area, has been formed during thelong-term process of coordination and meeting the structure, layout, division of spacefunction and the form development of buildings.The article, which selects three important factors of human environment including ethnicrelations, economic structure and belief and worship, takes the area of Lanping and Ninglangas examples to study the effect of human environment to the mode of production of timberdwelling and the division of space function of Pumi ethnic. The article also discusses the wayof the form development to adapt to the modern lifestyle and has concluded the relationshipbetween vernacular dwellings and human environment. Through the research, the authorhopes to offer a valuable reference for the further study of traditional dwellings of Pumiethnic.
