The art of Dunhuang Grottoes has gone through nearly a thousand years of development from the Sixteen countries to the Yuan Dynasty.With the plentiful content and various forms,its murals involving all aspects of social life and reflecting the folk customs and aesthetic culture of different times.The floral and bird patterns in Dunhuang is applied to the mural lining or specific decorative parts,it plays an important role in the decoration and beautification of the grottoes and strengthen the atmosphere as well.The topic of this study is focusing on the floral and bird patterns in Dunhuang murals.Through the comprehensive data collection,it sorted out the appearance of floral and bird patterns in different periods,summed up the regularities of its evolution and artistic features.To summarize the features of flower and bird patterns usage in different decorative parts,the information like pattern types,contents,cave numbers,decorative parts,ages,image data have been systematically integrated.Following the formal beauty principle of decorative patterns,it analyzed the beauty of flower and bird patterns in Dunhuang art from three aspects: shape,composition and color.As the supplement of the research,it also compared the application of flower and bird patterns in other paintings and crafts horizontally.Unlike the previous studies with the focus on painting and put particular emphasis on either the bird or the plant patterns,this study aims to explore the artistic value of the pattern of flower and bird as a whole from a decorative patterns perspective and enrich the current related studies.By making rational use through cultural creative design which takes culture,innovation and popularity into account,it could potentially benefit the inheritance and development of Dunhuang traditional pattern art and also provide new ideas on how to combine the tradition arts and modern design together.
