Based On Pictorial Space Of The Hongzhi Edition Of The Story Of The Western Wing

In order to explore the watching experience of existing gardens,this paper focuses on the connection between traditional garden painting watching and garden watching.Inspired by the spatial turn in the discipline of art history,the author attached importance to the spatiality and materiality of garden painting.The Hongzhi edition of The Story of the Western Wing was used as the main research target of garden painting.The full name is Xinkan dazi kuiben quanxiang canzeng qimiao zhushi Xixiangji,printed by early Ming Dynasty(1498),is not only the earliest woodblock which illustrated large-scale garden,but also valuable due to its “picture above-text below” page format.Connected with the painting works in the Ming-Qing Dynasties,the author found that the pictorial space paradigm of the Hongzhi edition is represented by an inward-looking world made up of several stage sets horizontally connected.The western part of Zhan Garden(in Nanjing)and the Elegant Bamboo House of the Canglang Pavilion(in Suzhou)were chosen as research targets of existing garden.The author discriminated the experience changes in the existing gardens,then substituted the watching method of the Hongzhi edition into them.The western part of the Zhan Garden,its watching experience from the east corridor changed after the repair project led by Liu Dunzhen.According to the moving frame inside handscroll,it showed that the dynamic frame effect by the east corridor was weakened;The Elegant Bamboo House went through several changes,and finally completed the classic architectural paradigm in modern times.From the composition of the horizontally long painting screen,it showed that the space of the Elegant Bamboo House can be deconstructed into a combination of three types of stage sets when watched.The authors conclude that painting watching is closely related to garden watching.Different forms of painting watching triggers different way of garden watching.
