Saperda populnea L.are the main branch-stem borer pests of poplar in northern China.Larvae of S.populnea bored the branch of poplar, and galls are formed in damaged parts.Galls hinder the normal transport of nutrient, result in dry branches,wind-breakages or whole plant death, which cause huge economic losses to poplar forestry. It was studied that indoor mating behavior of S.populnea, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry(GC-MS)analysis of its secretion, its spawn reaction to secretion extraction, electroantennogram(EAG)experiment to standard material and so on.The main conclusions are as follows1.The survival and mating status of S.populnea were observed by feeding branch in petri dish in suitable-mating-period and simulation-mating-period.It was found that adult S.populnea was active in the appropriate mating. There were some phenomena including male and female mating,same-sex intercourse, three insects overlaying mating. But the adult was not active in the simulate-mating-period,and existed only male and female mating. There were no difference on mating rate of S.populnea between adult with intact antennae and impaired antennae2.Groove and oviposition of fertilized female adults were studied on their secretions which were consisted of secretion extraction from seventh and eighth abdominal segment and feces of fertilized female, and from groove secretion. Results showed the selected groove ratio of adult to abdominal extraction is higher than that to fecal extraction and groove secretion.3.Chemical substances of secretion of S.populnea itself were analyzed by using GC-MS instrument.GC-MS analysis showed some chemical substances, such as limonene, linalool,Azelaic Acid,Nonanal,Methyl Salicylate,Farnesene, some substances, might cause oviposition deterrent behavior of female adult4.Reaction of female adult to standard materials and mixed standard substance was studied through EAG instrument.Reaction value showed S.populnea responded obviously to these substances. The further bioassay would be performed to determine what these substances could do on oviposition deterring function or oviposition luring function.
