The calculation and simulation of forest dynamic succession is always a significant issue of forest ecology.Different from traditional macroscope simulation way,in this paper, author proposed a bottom-up simulation approach based on individual plant growth model.Firstly,we constructed a parametric model of growth in individual plant. In this model,we considered and calculated the effects of health of plant, such as internal attributes, external environment and competition within neighborhood.Based on this,we could quantitatively calculate the change in the growth characteristics of plant(DBH?the number of seeding etc.)and adjudge the growth of the plant(growth, reproduction, death). On the basis of the model of the growth of individual plant,we all calculated the status of health for all the individual plants in a forest and the iterative calculation of its growth process to simulate the growth and succession of the whole forest area. The experiments reveals that the method used in the paper can simulate the dynamic changing effect of vegetation in the complex external environment, which can show the numerous typical succession phenomena of the vegetation, such as natural thinning, species competition and species succession.Because this method focuses on the individual plants and can provide their concise information,it can be well applied for visualized simulation of the forest, and has a certain value in the simulation of 3D landscapes.
