Empetrum nigrum var.japonicum is a rare plant with narrow distribution area in China. At present, there is little research on the growth characteristics of domestic and foreign countries. In this paper,Empetrum nigrum var.japonicum is taken as the research object to investigate the branch configuration, new branch, leaf shape and biomass characteristics of above ground parts of it in the three different habitats. The results are as follows:There are no significant differences in branch length,RBD(branch diameter ratio)and branch angle among the three habitats, indicating that the three indexes were less affected by habitat.(RBD)1:2<(RBD)2:3,which indicating that the bearing capacity between secondary branches and tertiary branches is strong. The average value of branch angle was more than 123°and stone gap>forest edge>sparse forest. The Stepwise branching rate of sparse forest was the largest, which indicated that the branch ability of sparse forest was relatively strong. The new branch of Empetrum nigrum var.japonicum has the following three types:extension branch, cluster branch and axillary branch. In all habitats, the branch extension is the main one,and the cluster branch SP=2,SP=3 is the most common. The length of the new branch had no significant difference between different types and different habitats(P>0.05),which indicated that the length of the new branch was less affected by the environment. There are significant differences in the leaf shape of Empetrum nigrum var.japonicum among the three habitat. The biomass of reproductive components(flower bud)was stone gap>forest edge>sparse forest, which indicated that Empetrum nigrum var.japonicum in the stone gap has strong capacity of sexual reproduction.
