Since the 20 th century, especially after the 2008 financial crisis, more and more countries have invested in overseas farmland(OFI).OFI has become an important measure to alleviate the food crisis.OFI investor countries invest in foreign land for grain production, and part of the grain produced is transported back to its country, which will theoretically affect the grain import of the investor countries. At the same time, the global circulation of grain produced by OFI can increase the global food supply, and indirectly affect the food imports of the investing countries, thus affecting the domestic food supply of the investing countries. However, there are few studies on the impact of OFI on grain imports of investing countries. The validity of OFI is still a blank. This is not conducive to policy makers making policy to play the important role of OFI.Based on this, this paper uses the difference-in-difference method. We select 13 investing countries and 9 non-investing countries through the data released by LAND MATRIX.Using the panel data of these countries from 2000 to 2016,the impact of OFI on the import of rice, wheat, maize and soybean in the investing countries is estimated, and the changing characteristics and shadows of the impact effect are also discussed.Through the research,it has confirmed that OFI has a significant impact on the import of food crops in the investing countries, and the degree of impact will change with the scale and quantity of OFI,which confirms the effectiveness of OFI in alleviating the food crisis in the investing countries.Countries facing food crisis or potential danger should attach importance to OFI.At the same time, this discovery has an important reference significance for China to formulate food security policy. At present, the scale and quantity of OFI in China are not large, and the degree of impact among various crops is not significant. If we continue to increase investment in OFI for the purpose of ensuring food security, the impact will increase accordingly.Relevant decision-making departments should guide OFI,encourage enterprises to invest in OFI,and give tax and credit support to OFI enterprises,so as to bring into play the huge potential role of OFI investment in China's food security.
