During the promotion of afforestation with grafted seedlings of Camellia oleifera in Guangxi province recently. Some prominent problems such as slow growth and difficult crown formation had seriously restricted the development of C.oleifera industry. The paper researched on grafting affinity of Southern China endemic species with Cenruan 3 by control with C.oleifera,as well as effects on rootstock to scion growth and development. So as to select superior rootstocks on promoting scion growth.By 4 years investigation in field through seedling and planting, the results were as following:1.To know how about the growth characteristics of the main oil-tea Camellia species in South China,we investigated the plant growth at 6 years and 8 months after planting. The results show that there were significant difference in plant height, ground diameter, crown width, stem, leaf, flower bud, fruit and root system growth among them.C.osmantha was the best among the 8 species in plant height, ground diameter, crown width, the quality of root, stem, leaf, flower bud and fresh fruit, which was 5.39 in 103.92 mm and 7.17 m2,7.58,26.76,9.88,1.42 and 7.25 kg in average single plant respectively. We think C.osmantha has the strongest growth potential.Principal component analysis(PCA)was used to evaluate the growth of eight oil-tea camellia species, the order from high to low was C.osmantha>C.vietnamensis>C.semiserrata>C.gigantocarpa>C.oleifera>C.nanyongensis>C.polyodonta>C.meiocarpa.2.In order to select superior rootstocks on promoting scion growth,in the paper, with C.oleifera rootstock as control, the effects of rootstock grafting of C.vietnamensis,C.semiserrata and C.osmantha on the growth of scion-grafted C.oleifera ’Cenruan 3’ were studied. The results show that the grafted seedling height, crown width, stem, leaf quality, and yield of fresh fruit per plant of C.vietnamensis and C.osmantha were significantly higher than those of C.oleifera after 4 years in plantation.C.osmantha and C.vietnamensis were significantly promoted the growth and fruit hanging of Cenruan 3,while C.semiserrata as rootstock inhibited plant growth and fruit formation.Principal component analysis(PCA)was used to evaluate the effects of four rootstocks on scion growth and development, the order from high to low was C.osmantha>C.vietnamensis>C.oleifera>C.semiserrata.3.The grown of 7 rootstock strains of C.vietnamensis and 19 rootstock strains of C.osmantha after 1 year planting were also investigated. Results show that the differences of the rootstock strains had significant effects on the growth of the plants. The height, ground diameter, crown width of the grafted plants and the number, length and diameter of summer shoots of the grafted plants were all significant difference.Except for L1,L7 of C.vietnamensis and X2,X7 and X12 of C.osmantha, the plant height, ground diameter, crown width, summer shoot number, length and thickness of the remaining 21 rootstock strains were significantly higher than those of the control. The coefficient of variation of crown width among rootstock strains of C.osmantha and C.vietnamensis was the largest, which was 0.4960 and 0.4757 respectively.Five fast-growing rootstock strains(X4,X5,X8,L3 and X19)of C.oleifera Cenruan 3 with high comprehensive score and low coefficient of variation were selected by principal component analysis(PCA)on the growth indexes of grafted plants.
