Investigation And Prevention And Control Of Diseases Frequently Occurring In Captive Kangaroos In Jinan Zoo

As one of the most common captive animals in zoos in China,kangaroo has always been popular among tourists.Kangaroo is a mammal native to Australia.It has a high incidence of disease since it was introduced into China.In this paper,by referring to animal archives,animal medical records,laboratory tests and death reports,the veterinarians,technicians and nurses were inquired and combined with clinical research,the frequent cases of captive kangaroos in Jinan Zoo in the past 10 years were investigated.By combining the clinical symptoms with the onset system,the diseases are divided into six categories: digestive diseases,respiratory diseases,lumpy jaw diseases,traumas,circulatory diseases and urinary diseases.According to the year,month and disease type,the preliminary statistical study was carried out.The results are as follows: a total of 50 cases.According to the annual statistics,the peak of the disease was in 2018,with 12 cases,accounting for 24%,mainly including 8 cases of digestive diseases,2 cases of respiratory diseases and 2 cases of trauma.The second cases were in 2013,2017 and 2019,with 6cases.According to monthly statistics,the peak of the disease was in May and April,accounting for 38%(19/50).It may be related to the gradual increase of temperature in these two months but still unstable,or it may be related to the decrease of body resistance caused by the unsuitable environment after moving to the transitional cage,the proportion of respiratory diseases(cold)and the obvious increase of digestive diseases(coccidiosis)infection.According to the classification of diseases,the most common diseases were 36%digestive diseases(18),22% respiratory diseases(11),18% trauma(9),16% lumpy jaw disease(8),6% circulatory disease(3),and 2% urinary disease(1).The cure rate of cold was100%,the death rate of lumpy jaw disease and trauma was 75%(6/8)and 45%(4/9)respectively.Based on the analysis of the research results,the prevention and control strategies were put forward,which provided an important clinical basis for disease prevention and control of captive kangaroos in the future.
