Objective:Many studies have investigated the prognostic role or the clinical significance of nm23 or E-cadherin in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC);however, the result still remains inconclusive. An up-to data system review and meta-analysis was necessary to give a comprehensive evaluation of the prognostic role of nm23 and E-cadherin in NPC respectively.Methodology:Eligible studies were searched in Pubmed,Science Direct and Cochrane Central register of controlled trials(CENTRAL),CNKI,Weipu and Wanfang databases, other relevant studies were also identified by hand-searching references. The quality of the methodology of the included studies was assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa scale(NOS)recommended by the Cochrane Non-Randomized Studies Methods Working Group.Meta analysis was conducted with RevMan 5.3 soaftware, calculating odds ratios(ORs)with 95%confidence interval(95%CI)to estimate the effect, working out forest plots and funnel plots. Results:A total of 42 studies on nm23 comprising 3156 cases and 34 studies on E-cadherin comprising 3693 cases met the inclusion criteria.Meta-analysis suggested that downregulated nm23 expression was significant associated with unfavorable TNM stages, lymphnode metastasis, distant metastasis and 5-year overall survival(OS)in patients with NPC;while downregulated E-cadherin expression was significant associated with unfavorable TNM stage, lymphnode metastasis and distant metastasis. Conclusions:This meta-analysis reveales that downregulated expression of both nm23 and E-cadherin detected by IHC may correlate with tumour progression, and can be predicative factors of poor prognosis for NPC.
